the new overtime rule is on hold
That new overtime rule that was coming next week that would have required an additional 4.2 million American workers to be paid overtime if they work more than 40 hours in a week.? It’s been blocked.
It’s not a permanent stop to it, just a temporary halt. That said, this may be the end of the rule as we knew it. If this had happened some time after the December 1 implementation, I suspect many employers would have stayed with the new rule because they wouldn’t have wanted to switch people to a higher salary and then switch them back to a lower one. But coming 10 days before the implementation date and with a new administration and Congress coming in, there’s a decent chance we won’t see this move forward in its current form at all.
I do think we’ll see some update to the threshold for being exempt from overtime pay, but I’d bet a reasonable amount of money that it won’t be the change everyone spent the last few months preparing for.
